How Apple Plans to Dominate the AI Space: A Look at Apple Intelligence and AI-Powered Features
Apple’s Strategic Move into AI with Apple Intelligence and Advanced Machine Learning
Apple Intelligence just released, unleashing AI in Apple products this month. Apple is always a step behind all other FAANG companies, but let’s talk about whether that matters because Apple AI features, such as the initial rollout of Siri Intelligence, may set the stage for something big.
As of October 2024, Apple has finally stepped into the artificial intelligence (AI) ring. They are staking a claim in a $ 146.09 billion industry in 2024.
My question is, is it too late?
Apple’s Grand Entrance into the AI Arena
While Apple may be a late bloomer like I was when I hit puberty after everyone else in high school, they know how to make an entrance. Apple has certainly made a show with Apple Intelligence, which is precisely what you would expect from a company with a cult following and users who will gladly drink their Kool-Aid.

Apple Intelligence will rainbow across the entire tech industry for millions of users now that it has been unleashed on millions of Apple devices.
Apple’s AI strategy is reshaping the tech landscape. It blends advanced intelligence with a heavy focus on unmatched privacy, addressing a significant concern for users.
For consumers, it means more intuitive, personal experiences; for tech enthusiasts, it means Apple is redefining the future of intelligent technology.

Apple’s Journey in AI: Laying the Foundation for Apple Intelligence
Apple has been laying the foundation for AI, but you may not have noticed—except for one thing.
Siri: The Voice Assistant Pioneer: Introduced in 2011, Siri was one of the first mainstream voice assistants (take that, Alexa 👊).
Apple Neural Engine: In 2017, Apple introduced the Neural Engine, a dedicated component designed to accelerate iOS machine learning tasks directly on devices.
Core ML: In 2017, Apple released Core ML, a machine learning framework that makes it easier for developers to integrate AI models into their apps.
Acquisitions: Strengthening AI Capabilities
Turi (2016): A machine learning platform simplifying AI development.
Xnor.ai (2020): Specialized in low-power, edge-based AI, aligning with Apple’s emphasis on efficient on-device processing.
Inductiv (2020): Focused on automating, identifying, and correcting data errors, enhancing data quality.
Most consumers will have yet to hear of or care about these product updates and integrations. For tech enthusiasts, the breadcrumbs may have been spotted, but millions of us had no idea when Apple would join the AI movement.
Inside Apple Intelligence: AI Features Designed for Everyday Life
The timing is irrelevant. Apple’s products will fly off the shelves.
Did you know that Apple partnered with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and is in talks with Google to integrate Gemini into Apple Intelligence? (PCMag)
Let's take a look behind the curtain and see what the initial rollout includes and see if Apple Intelligence enhances everyday life:
Writing Tools: Integrated across various apps, these tools assist in proofreading, rewriting text in different tones, summarizing content, streamlining communication, and content creation.
Summaries: This feature condenses lengthy emails, messages, and notifications, allowing users to grasp essential information quickly without sifting through extensive content.
Siri Enhancements: Siri has been revamped to offer a more natural and conversational interaction, with improved contextual understanding and the ability to handle follow-up queries more effectively.
Photos App Improvements: The ‘Clean Up’ tool enables users to seamlessly remove unwanted objects from photos. Additionally, enhanced search capabilities allow natural language queries to locate specific images.
Mail App Upgrades: The Mail app now features smart replies, prioritization of essential emails, and the ability to summarize lengthy messages, enhancing email management efficiency.
Speech-to-Text Transcription: Users can transcribe voice recordings and phone calls into text, with automatic summaries highlighting key points, facilitating more accessible review and note-taking.
As a solopreneur, content creator, and UI/UX designer, I have noticed that these new features have been helping my workflow. Mixing Grammarly and Apple Intelligence’s writing helper has been an interesting mix, and if anyone is curious to learn how to utilize it in their writing, leave a comment!
How Apple Intelligence Redefines User Experience for a New Generation
Apple Intelligence’s initial release only benefits Millennials and Gen Z.
When I tried to explain the new updates released for iPhone and Mac to my Mom, she didn't seem to have a clue how any of it helped her, but I was like a kid in a candy store with excitement.
It’s good that 70% of iPhone, iPad, and Mac users are under 45. (Phone Arena)
The age distribution is as follows:
Ages 18-24: 22% of iPhone users
Ages 25-34: 27% of iPhone users
Ages 35-44: 23% of iPhone users.
These statistics show why this Apple Intelligence release will be a huge hit. It appeals to the company’s largest age demographic, reflecting its focus on innovation and user-friendly design that resonates with the younger generation.
Even if Android and Google released their arsenal of Samsung devices long before Apple, they only use their own Google AI models and Samsung’s new ones.
Apple’s approach utilizes the two most significant models from Google and now OpenAI, so you could argue that they will have a better product by using the two largest and established AI superpowers as their own while Samsung is trying to get their models up to par.
Jumping in last into the AI race has its advantages, and Apple’s brand loyalty is unmatched, so expect big things.
What Apple’s Leaders Are Saying: Insights from Tim Cook and More
From the horse’s mouth, Apple will address one of the top concerns for Apple Intelligence: privacy—a similar stance to what they have been mentioning with Safari in their marketing to combat Google.
Apple Intelligence is sure to be big news, as it aims to answer the masses’ primary concern about AI and have the brand power they do.
Both CEO Tim Cook and John Giannandrea, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, shared these insights in interviews:
On AI’s Role in Apple’s Products: “We view AI as a fundamental, horizontal technology that is core to our products.” - Tim Cook (TechCrunch)
Regarding Privacy in AI Development: “We don’t believe in collecting vast amounts of personal data to train AI models. Our approach is to build AI that respects user privacy.” - Tim Cook (iClarified)
On AI Enhancing User Experience: “Our goal is to integrate AI seamlessly into our products, making them more intuitive and helpful without compromising user trust.” - John Giannandrea (Business Insider)
Take a look at this interview with Tim Cook from WWDC 2024:
